National Garage Safety Week, August 7 – 13

Third Annual Garage Safety Week Announced

Program’s Goal is to Prevent Millions of Injuries
That Occur in the Home Each Year

Syosset, N.Y. (June 2006) GarageTek, producer of the leading installed garage organization and storage systems, is proud to announce that it will continue its partnership with the Home Safety Council this year with its Garage Safety Awareness Week Campaign during August 7–13, 2006.

The consumer education campaign was initiated three years ago when GarageTek’s franchisees reported that many customers were installing the GarageTek garage storage and organization system after an accident or injury occurred in the home.

"The GarageTek system helps consumers not only to attain a clean and organized garage, but a safer one." explains Marc Shuman, President of GarageTek Inc. In fact, the tagline for the Garage Safety Awareness campaign is "A clean garage is a safe garage."

The Home Safety Council is a Washington, DC-based, non-profit organization dedicated to educating and empowering people of all ages to take actions that will help keep them and their loved ones safe in and around their homes. GarageTek partnered with the Home Safety Council in 2004 because its garage safety message fit well with the Council's goal of preventing home injuries that result in 21 million medical visits each year. On average, 94% of American homeowners store dangerous items such as chemicals and sharp tools in their garage. The Home Safety Council recognized GarageTek's commitment to preventing garage-related injuries with the Safety All-Star Award in 2006.

"The summer is a great time to review the condition of the garage," explained Meri-K Appy, President of the Home Safety Council. "There's a lot of outside activity, kids are running in and out to get their bicycles and toys and extra seasonal items are in constant use. Consumers are increasingly using their garage as an extension of their homes. It just makes sense for them to ensure the safety of their garage space as they would any other part of their home."

Elements that will be included in this year's Garage Safety Awareness Campaign will include:

  • A Web Site devoted to preventing accidents in the garage
    (www.garagesafety.info)
  • Garage Safety Seminars given by Garage Safety Experts across the country
  • Educational Materials, including garage safety posters and brochures, Children's Activity Sheet and Garage Safety Tips Sheet
