Leading Organizer Promotes Garage Safety Awareness Week
GarageTek offers helpful tips on how to keep you and your family safe

Syosset, NY (Grassroots Newswire) <Date?we need this> -- Typically, when you run out of space in your house to put bikes, tools, toys and other things of the like, you turn to good old faithful – the garage. But after the build-up of stuff, your garage can easily transform into a junkyard. And safety experts say it also becomes an invitation for injuries.

Recent studies show that slips and falls are the leading causes of unintentional home injuries and related deaths in and around the home. Individuals may fall in the garage due to spills on the floor, climbing ladders to reach needed items, and tripping over tools and toys not properly stored. GarageTek, the nation's premier garage organization and storage system, felt it was important to spread the message of garage safety. That is why they are heading their third annual "Garage Safety Awareness Week" campaign with the Home Safety Council August 7 to 13.

"Our goal is to encourage people to organize their garages and prevent injuries," said Marc Shuman, president of GarageTek. "Many garage users are unconcerned about safety hazards in their garages, even though studies show that one out of every three people report that a garage-related injury has occurred in their home."
Nearly 20,000 deaths and 21 million medical visits each year are caused by home injuries, according to recent studies. That's not surprising considering that 94 percent of homeowners store potentially dangerous items in their garage such as chemicals, sharp tools and general clutter. It is important to find a place for everything in your garage and put everything in its place – and GarageTek is here to help.
Together, GarageTek and the Home Safety Council offers the local community the following helpful advice and informative tips on how to keep your garage safe for you and your family:
  • Create order in your garage by designating zones for items, such as lawn and garden tools, auto care, household supplies, sporting goods, etc.
  • Throw out garage junk! Donate what is usable and dispose of what's left.
  • Do not pile objects or materials. Children may climb on them to play and fall.
  • Hang shovels, rakes, lawn chairs, bikes and other sharp objects securely from pegs on a sidewall. Hang sharp edges toward the wall.
  • Designate an area for the children's toys. Do not store them near potentially dangerous items.
  • Properly secure cabinets and shelves to the walls to store items.
  • Install sturdy, ceiling mounted storage grids to keep seldom-used or seasonal items out of the way.
  • Store household and garden products on a high shelf out of reach of children to prevent unintentional poisonings.
  • Consider installing a Self-Charging Smoke Alarm in your garage with light-switch testing and silencing.

On their informative Web site, GarageTek and the Home Safety Council list the most common garage hazards that people encounter. They also offer tips on how to organize your garage and ways to avoid potentially hazardous situations. A free, printable checklist also allows you to complete a thorough walk-through of your garage.
"These safety measures will ensure a cleaner, safer garage. A little planning and organization really goes a long way," said Shuman.
